FEATURED PROJECT:
Firestone Building Renovation Adaptive Re-Use
In 1986, the historic “old Jail” was
adapted for re-use by the Division of Corporations, Florida
Department of State. This project required careful consideration
of the Department of State’s high tech office functions
while preserving the building’s unique 1932 Art Deco
appearance. Johnson/Peterson was able to retain the facade,
while converting the interior into highly functional office
space. The 27,000 sf renovation and the 17,000 sf addition
made space for the Division of Corporations state-of-the-art
data center and administrative offices. The “Old Jail” adaptation
received: The “Historic Preservation Award - Outstanding
Achievement in Rehabilitation - 1991” from the Tallahassee
- Leon County Historic Preservation Board and Florida Heritage
Foundation; the “Award for Excellence in Architecture
- 1987” from the Florida North Central Chapter of the
American Institute of Architects; and, the “Outstanding
Preservation Project for Adaptive Re-use of a Historic Structure
- 1986” from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation.
