SELECTED PROJECT:
Bryan Hall Dormitory Renovation
Bryan Hall was FSU’s first masonry dormitory
and is now the longest standing building on that campus as
well as any other campus in the State University System. Construction
was originally completed in 1907 and the dorm immediately became
the social center of the College. During reconstruction, substantial
structural problems were discovered involving deteriorating
masonry mortar. Large portions of the facade were rebuilt using
original brick. A foundation “watering” system
was installed to maintain the “pipe” clay in an
expanded state and eliminate seasonal expansion and contraction
pressures on the masonry foundation. Most of the original wood
stairs and balconies were replicated in the main lounge. In
addition to those spaces available in all dormitories, Bryan
Hall contains several classrooms which make its residential/academic
program unique on campus. Today, Bryan Hall is once again one
of the most popular residence halls at FSU. Its combined living
and learning programs have made it a model for future housing.
