SELECTED PROJECT:
Union Correctional Institute
Johnson/Peterson designed this 50-bed Mental
Health Treatment Facility as a maximum security facility to
serve inmates from the Union Correctional Institution and the
Florida State Prison, as well as other inmates who are considered
high security risks. The main section of the building houses
the administration areas, psychiatric and human services offices,
conference room, medical examination rooms, and the security
control station. Four housing wings extend from a central core
with two nursing stations and four dayrooms. Two of the four
wings are known as the Crisis Stabilization Unit. The CSU provides
a highly structured setting for evaluation, care and treatment
of inmates who are experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms
and/or disorder. A group therapy room is adjacent to the CSU.
The two remaining wings are called the Transitional Care Unit,
which provides a less structured setting than the CSU. The
TSU wings are used for the care and treatment of inmates who
require psychiatric stabilization or rehabilitation before
they can be safely and adequately housed within the general
inmate population and treated on an outpatient basis. The TSU
consists of 34 cells and two special suicide rooms. This 16,448
SF project was completed in 1993 at a construction cost of
$2,300,000. An additional phase with a 12,000 SF separate building
consisting of administrative and out-patient type services
for inmates was completed in the spring of 1997. A fourth phase
connecting the two earlier phases and adding another TSU wing
was completed in late 1997. Total construction cost for these
two additional phases was $2.7 million.
